Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities. This law is applicable to public and private primary and secondary schools, school districts, educational institutions and universities that receive federal funds.

Under Title IX, sex discrimination can include sexual violence and harassment. This law protects all students regardless of the sex of the person who commits the rape or the victim. All students are protected by Title IX, regardless of disability, national origin, immigration status, sexual orientation or identity.
